Race Training Introduction

The Club is delighted to have again secured the services of Sean Langmuir and his Alpine Training Centre to provide a high quality domestic and alpine training programme for our young aspiring ski racers. Sean as a long-time SSC member will be familiar to many of you.  Both he and head coach Ali Kuwall work full time on the planning and delivery of high quality alpine ski coaching.

Our vision is to continue to develop this joint venture combining the history and infrastructure of the SSC and the professionalism and expertise of ATC to create a Scottish based domestic and Alpine programme to rival the UK alpine based ski academies, but at significantly less cost. Our aim is to create a peer group of young ski racers of a size and quality that has not been seen in Scotland for decades.

The aim is to run a programme again on Cairngorm. The programme is centred around the 12 weekends over the winter period from the beginning of January to the end of March. Our aim is to provide training whatever the weather – wherever possible on snow, but on dryland if all the ski areas are stormbound.

We will also have access to mid-week dryland sessions organised on Wednesday nights in Stirling, as well as Braehead in Glasgow for snow training on a Tuesday night.

It is anticipated that our young ski racers will be involved in Sean’s Scottish and Alpine based camps with ATC using if not the same coaches, then at least coaches working to the same structure and standards. Sean has also committed to the mentoring and training of our own young club coaches.

The SSC Racing team are delighted announce for 2017 a new partnership with Trespass Clothing to sponsor our trainees next winter. The clothing will come taped, waterproof and breathable for the Under 10 and 12 age groups and as a soft-shell jacket/ hard shell pant for the Under 14 and 16 groups. This will be included free of charge alongside a SSC Racing hoodie in the 10 and 20 day package price.

We have chosen standout colours to make a statement on the hill, but apologies in advance to those parents with children attracted to the patches of mud not infrequent in the Scottish mountains. They are fully machine washable.

Also new for 2017 is the purchase of light weight slalom gates to help the U14 age group in their transition from stubbies to full gates.

The new wood burning stove is now installed and working in the Cairngorm hut and we are working on the coffee machine!

Fundraising is scheduled for Sunday November 6th 2016 with the Ski and Bike sale in Stirling. Details to follow.

Athlete / coach ratios are set at this point at 10:1 but we are aiming for a better quality ratio of 6:1 as more funding becomes available.

We would also like to make the training available from under 10 to junior under 16. U8 will be by invitation only this year. U8 trials can be organised throughout the season by prior arrangement with lucy.mackechnie@btinternet.com or pre-season on a Tuesday night at one of the ATC sessions.

This continues to be a really exciting time for the Club. We hope to build on the success of last year where the number of training days doubled from previous years. We hope to further increase the base of our pyramid of young ski racers and that ultimately we will produce world class ski racers from this programme.
