Race Training Introduction

The Club is delighted to have again secured the services of Sean Langmuir and his Alpine Training Centre to provide a high quality domestic and alpine training programme for our young aspiring ski racers. Sean as a long-time SSC member will be familiar to many of you. He works full time on the planning and delivery of high quality alpine ski coaching.

This joint venture combines the history and infrastructure of the SSC and the professionalism and expertise of ATC to create a Scottish based domestic and Alpine programme to rival the UK alpine based ski academies, but at significantly less cost. Over the last 3 years we have created a fantastic peer group of young ski racers who are competing Nationally and Internationally at the highest levels.

The plan for 2019 is to run programmes again on Cairngorm and at Nevis Range. The programme is based on the 12 weekends over the winter period from the beginning of January to the end of March at Cairngorm and 5 weekends at Nevis Range. Our aim is to provide training whatever the weather – wherever possible on snow, but on dryland if all the ski areas are stormbound. We will run additional training sessions pre-season in December and after the Easter break as we did last season depending on snow conditions.

We will also have access to mid-week dryland sessions organised on Wednesday nights in Stirling, as well as Braehead in Glasgow for snow training on a Tuesday night.

It is anticipated that our young ski racers will be involved in Sean’s Scottish and Alpine based camps with ATC using if not the same coaches, then at least coaches working to the same structure and standards. Sean has also committed to the mentoring and training of our own young club coaches who made a fantastic contribution last season.

We are pleased to welcome back SSC coaching stalwarts Jamie MacWilliam who will next season be acting as Head Coach, ably assisted by Meghan Costello. Both have built up a wealth of experience on Cairngorm and are ideally placed to maximise the training opportunities which often vary depending on the conditions. Programme Director will be Mark Blyth who will also be coaching regularly on the hill.

The SSC Racing team are delighted to be able to continue for 2019 our sponsorship with Blues/Tiso which will offer a 20% discount on all ski racing equipment at Blues stores with a discount card issued to all trainees who register for the 10 and 20 day packages. This will include ski servicing at the new Tiso store in Aviemore, scheduled to open soon. The partnership also provides funds to help underwrite our domestic and alpine programme which allows us to keep training costs at very competitive rates.

We will continue our partnership with Trespass Clothing with suits from the high quality DLX range worth well over £300. The clothing is taped, waterproof and breathable with jacket and pants for the Under 10 and 12 age groups and jacket only for the Under 14 and 16 groups and comes with the SSC Racing and Blues/Tiso logos.. We will make every effort to try and include the clothing in the price of the training for the 10 and 20 day packages but parents may be asked to subsidise the cost (max. £50) of the jackets/ trousers e.g. if there are more than anticipated new jackets/ski pants required.  With the increased quality we are in the process of recycling existing suits amongst the current trainees with new suits only for those new to the programme or for who have outgrown their suit and can’t be supplied with a swap.

We are also delighted to be able to offer a long SSC training weekends at Steinach in Austria on weekend December 8-9th. These will be in association with Alpine Training Centre. Details of this will be confirmed in the Autumn. This is great way to hit the front end of the season running and gives trainees the best opportunities in the eary season races. The aim is to maximise the training time on the hill during these weekends when the hill is quiet.

We have refurbished the U12 lightweight gates for next season and will have new M1 priority bibs ready to take advantage of our improved access to uplift on Cairngorm for training.

After the great winter of last season this continues to be a really exciting time for the Club.
