Race Training Introduction

RACE TRAINING WINTER 2020

The Club is delighted to have again secured the services of Sean Langmuir and his Alpine Training Centre to provide a high quality domestic and alpine training programme for our young aspiring ski racers. Sean as a long-time SSC member will be familiar to many of you. He works full time on the planning and delivery of high quality alpine ski coaching.

This joint venture combines the history and infrastructure of the SSC and the professionalism and expertise of ATC to create a Scottish based domestic and Alpine programme to rival the UK alpine based ski academies, but at significantly less cost. Over the last 3 years we have created a fantastic peer group of young ski racers who are competing Nationally and Internationally at the highest levels.

The plan for 2020 is to run the programme again on Cairngorm based on the 13 weekends over the winter period from the beginning of January to the end of March. Our aim is to provide training whatever the weather – wherever possible on snow, but on dryland if all the ski area is stormbound. We will run additional training sessions pre-season in December and after the Easter break as we did last season depending on snow conditions.

We have been in constant communication with Cairngorm Mountain and are confident that we can run a comprehensive programme despite the difficulty created with the Funicular out of action. The reduced footfall on the mountain gives us a real opportunity for access to the best terrain to train.

We will also have access to mid-week sessions at Braehead in Glasgow for snow training on a Tuesday night with ATC.

It is anticipated that our young ski racers will be involved in Sean’s Scottish and Alpine based camps with ATC using if not the same coaches, then at least coaches working to the same structure and standards. Sean has also committed to the mentoring and training of our own young club coaches who made a fantastic contribution last season.

The SSC Racing team are delighted to be able to continue for 2020 our sponsorship with Blues/Tiso which will offer a 20% discount on all ski racing equipment at Blues stores with a discount card issued to all trainees who register for the 10 and 20 day packages. This will include ski servicing at the new Tiso store in Aviemore. The partnership also provides funds to help underwrite our domestic and alpine programme which allows us to keep training costs at very competitive rates.

We will continue our partnership with Trespass Clothing with suits from the high quality DLX range worth well over £300. The clothing is taped, waterproof and breathable with jackets for all age groups which come with the SSC Racing and Blues/Tiso logos.  Trainees will be asked to wear Club jackets at all time during SSC training sessions on the hill. Not only does this give the club identity on the hill, but it helps the coaches with safety in low visibility conditions and ensures that nobody gets lost!

Jackets are available at the competitive price of £50 for all age groups and can be ordered through the website on booking of training packages. We would ask that dark blue or black sallopettes or training shorts are worn on the lower half. There are a number of existing jackets amongst the current trainees which they have outgrown and which will be available for recycling.

We have invested again in equipment and have a new set of digital radios to help with communication on the hill.
