Race Training Introduction
RACE TRAINING WINTER 2018
Stop press 01/11/17:
The Club is delighted to have again secured the services of Sean Langmuir and his Alpine Training Centre to provide a high quality domestic and alpine training programme for our young aspiring ski racers. Sean as a long-time SSC member will be familiar to many of you. Both he and head coach Ali Kuwall work full time on the planning and delivery of high quality alpine ski coaching.
Our vision is to continue to develop this joint venture combining the history and infrastructure of the SSC and the professionalism and expertise of ATC to create a Scottish based domestic and Alpine programme to rival the UK alpine based ski academies, but at significantly less cost. Our aim is to create a peer group of young ski racers of a size and quality that has not been seen in Scotland for decades.
The aim is to run programmes again on Cairngorm and at Nevis Range. The programme is centred around the 12 weekends over the winter period from the beginning of January to the end of March at Cairngorm and 5 weekends at Nevis Range. Our aim is to provide training whatever the weather – wherever possible on snow, but on dryland if all the ski areas are stormbound.
We will also have access to mid-week dryland sessions organised on Wednesday nights in Stirling, as well as Braehead in Glasgow for snow training on a Tuesday night.
It is anticipated that our young ski racers will be involved in Sean’s Scottish and Alpine based camps with ATC using if not the same coaches, then at least coaches working to the same structure and standards. Sean has also committed to the mentoring and training of our own young club coaches.
The SSC Racing team are delighted to announce for 2018 a new sponsorship with Blues/Tiso which will offer a 20% discount on all ski racing equipment at Blues stores with a discount card issued to all trainees who register for the 10 and 20 day packages. This will include ski servicing at the new Tiso store in Aviemore, scheduled to open this winter. The partnership will also provide funds to help underwrite our domestic and alpine programme. This has allowed us to make substantial reductions in the cost of training for parents this year.
We will continue our partnership with Trespass Clothing and have negotiated clothing for our trainees next winter from the high quality DLX range worth well over £300. The clothing will come taped, waterproof and breathable with jacket and pants for the Under 10 and 12 age groups and jacket only for the Under 14 and 16 groups. This will be included free of charge in the 10 and 20 day package prices. All clothing will have the SSC Racing and Blues/Tiso logos. With the increased quality we anticipate that the clothing turnover rate will be reduced and it is likely that we will be able to keep it for at least 2 seasons with issues for trainees next year only for those who have outgrown their suits or are new to the programme.
We are also delighted to announce for 2018 our 3 day long SSC training weekends at Steinach in Austria on December 7-10, January 11-14 and March 1-4. These will be in association with Alpine Training Centre. Flights to Innsbruck via Frankfurt leave on a Thursday night and return on a Sunday night (only missing school on Friday). We will try to maximise the training time on the hill during these weekends and with school tutoring available for those that want it.
We are offering these weekends at a discounted £250 (inclusive of transfers, accommodation, food, liftpass and training), excluding the cost of a return flight (approx £200). The discounted price will be covered by SSC for those taking up the 20 day package. Training days used in Austria will be deducted from the 20 day package total. We will limit the number of Steinach weekend discounts to one per trainee per season in the first instance but may be able to afford to fund more than one weekend depending on uptake.
We have upgraded another 40 x 27mm slalom gates to brushes, refurbished the U14 lightweight gates and hope to have new GS banners with the SSC Racing logo in time for the new season.
The new wood burning stove worked well in the Cairngorm hut last season and we are working on the coffee machine!

Training is available from under 10 to under 16. U8 will again be by invitation only this year. U8 trials can be organised throughout the season by prior arrangement with firstname.lastname@example.org or pre-season on a Tuesday night at one of the ATC sessions at Snowfactor, Braehead in Glasgow.
This continues to be a really exciting time for the Club. We hope to build on the success of last year where we ran a comprehensive programme despite the poor snow conditions. We hope to further increase the base of our pyramid of young ski racers and that ultimately we will produce world class ski racers from this programme.
