New Year Camp 2026
Sun 28 Dec 2025 – Wed 07 Jan 2026
Kaprun, AUT
The New Year camp is a great opportunity to get some training and BASS/minis races done in a relatively short camp. The races are run at Hinterreit, a training mecca for European ski racers, and there are lots of options for training nearby, including some time on the race hill. There are countless resorts to explore for freeskiing, which we do every day after the races.
Schedule & Races
The plan is to train 29 Dec-1 Jan – training venues each day are TBC subject to conditions, lane space availability, etc. The races are from 2-6 Jan. We buy a Super Ski Card lift pass which gives us the flexibility to ski at any of the local areas.
You are responsible for entering the races yourself. You must have a valid BASS competitor registration and enter online by the deadline to attend the camp. The races are the Ambition Children’s Championships at Hinterreit/Maria Alm. See GBSki for details »

Join This Camp
All camp attendees must be a member of Scottish Ski Club for the season the camp happens within. You can join this camp for individual or multiple weeks.
The camp is open to all good skiers aged U10-U16 (see GBSki for year-of-birth-based age groups). Athletes can attend the camp as an inlier (all-inclusive residential camp) or as an outlier (coaching on the hill each day only). We would encourage all athletes aged U12 and older to join on a residential (inlier) basis to get the most out of the camp. U10s are welcome as outliers, as well as any older trainees not joining as inliers. We do not normally take U8s on Alpine camps, and they cannot enter the races.
For both inliers and outliers, a £750 deposit is necessary to register for the camp. The remainder of the balance is due 2 weeks before the camp. All payments are by bank transfer.
Pricing
This camp is subject to minimum numbers – place your deposit now to avoid disappointment!
Inlier (residential camp)
£2,250*
*If there is a lot of interest in the camp, we may be able to reduce this!
Outlier (on-hill only)
TBC subject to demand
(We always try to aim for £95/day)
Outliers will likely be able to join off-hill activities, however this cannot guaranteed. The coaching team will confirm this on a day-by-day basis on the camp.
Insurance
Travel insurance, including specific cover for ski racing, is mandatory for all camp attendees (residential or not). You will need to provide proof (certificate of insurance). See our Camp Packing List for more information.
All coaches are qualified through BASI, Snowsport Scotland, or another relevant governing body. All coaches are first-aid trained and all staff have a valid PVG membership.
Further Guidance and Advice
We recommend that all parents read through Alpine Training Centre SCIO’s Parents’ Guide to Alpine Ski Racing. This resource offers advice and insight from sports scientists, coaches and other skiing parents. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Head Coach, Calum Shepherd, by email at coaching@scottishskiclub.org.uk to discuss anything you wish.
More About This Camp
Team Base
SSC staff and inliers will be staying at the Sportpension Thayer in Kaprun. From there, we have close access to the ski resort of Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn, with Pass Thurn/Kitzbuhel, Zell am See, and Hinterreit/Maria Alm all within a 30 minute drive. The hotel has been hosting international ski teams for over 4 decades and caters very well to us.
Whilst we don’t mind outliers staying nearby the team hotel, we would ask that outliers do not book in to the team hotel directly. If you would like your child(ren) to be a part of the camp at the team hotel, you can book them in as an inlier, and you are more than welcome stay together nearby at other accommodation.
Travel
Accompanied flights are available for inliers. You are responsible for booking these and should do so after receiving confirmation of your camp place. This confirmation will include instructions and all the details (inc. booking refs) you need.

Luggage
The team van will be travelling to & from Kaprun for this camp. We can take skis + poles (not in bags), and luggage, for £20 per pair/item of luggage each way. This is available for all camp attendees, subject to space being available in the van. Please, no loose items.
Kit can be dropped off for travel out in Edinburgh (and other locations TBC). The van will leave Edinburgh on Boxing Day, so equipment should be with the van by 23rd, and will return in mid-January. Space is offered first-come, first-serve and must be pre-booked.
Training Objectives
The New Year camp gives a great chance to strike the perfect balance of freeskiing and time in gates. Being right in the winter season, the chances of a powder day are high, and we will certainly take advantage of any fresh snow to explore the off-piste safely! There are so many ski areas local to our base that we can explore, so the athletes get to see way more than just one boring training slope.
The races include some speed/kombi, so we will maximise any speed training opportunities, and would encourage everyone to enter the speed race. The race piste is not too challenging for Super-G, so it is not to be missed!
As we ski longer days than in the early/late season, we tend to do less fitness on this camp, but there’s still a focus on ski tuning. Coaches are, of course, on-hand to help with that, especially to make sure that skis are race-ready. It is a full schedule and athletes need to be focussed, healthy and motivated to get the most out of this camp.
